For new parents, changing a diaper can be a source of fear or anxiety. The good news is that becoming a pro requires only a little practice.
How to Change a Diaper in 7 Easy Steps:
Step 1: Before you begin, make sure that all of your supplies are within easy reach:
cotton balls
warm water
baby washcloths
diaper cream or ointment
clean clothes (in case the diaper has leaked)
Step 2: Lay your baby flat on her back on a changing table, washable pad, or thick towel. Unfold a clean diaper and set it aside. Remember, even if your baby won't be able to roll over for months, keep an eye on him at all times while he's on the changing table. Don't even think about leaving him alone for a second!
Step 3: Place a clean diaper underneath your baby in case she pees or has a bowel movement. (Fresh air on the skin can cause your baby to pee, so be cautious!) If you have a boy, cover his penis with a baby washcloth to prevent him from using you as a target practice. To distract your baby while changing him, try talking, singing, or making funny faces.
Step 4: Wipe from front to back, making sure to clean inside all creases. If your baby has a bowel movement, use the dirty diaper's unsoiled parts to clean up as much of the mess as possible. Meconium (your baby's first stool) can be extremely sticky, making it difficult to remove. Some parents swear by using water and a washcloth, while others swear by using baby oil on a cotton ball. Experiment to find out what works best for you.
Step 5: To avoid diaper rash, allow the area to completely dry before applying diaper cream and/or a clean diaper. To expedite the drying process, use a baby washcloth or lightly blow on the affected area. Apply a liberal amount of diaper cream or ointment to areas that appear pink and rashy.
Step 6: Lift your baby's legs and place the clean, unfolded diaper you saved earlier beneath his bottom. If you have a boy, ensure that his penis is pointing down. Fasten the front of the diaper between his legs.
Step 7: Roll up the dirty diaper before disposing of it to contain the odor and mess. When you're finished, remember to wash your hands with soap and warm water!
You'll be a pro in no time if you follow these instructions!
